History of School Nursing Organizations in New York State

The New York State School Nurse Teachers Association dissolved in 1979.  Some School Nurse Teachers joined the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA).

In 1983 the New York State Nurses Association created an organizational unit for school nurses.

In March 1986, the New York State Association of School Nurses (NYSASN) was organized and later affiliated with the National Association of School Nurses (NASN).

In May 2006, by a majority vote, the NYSASN membership voted to unify with NASN, and now members of NYSASN will also be members of NASN, enjoying benefits of both professional school nursing organizations.

NYSASN Accomplishments:

  1. Has coordinated an annual School Nurse Orientation Program in conjunction with NYSNA and the NYS Education Department since 1989.

  2. Publishes a triannual newsletter, "The Communicator"', which provides up to date information on the practice of school nursing and is a member's only benefit.

  3. Developed a Response Paper to the NYSNA Position Paper on School Health Nursing.

  4. Adopted three resolutions in the Fall of 1990. Two of these were presented at the New York State United Teachers Representative Assembly in March 1991.

  5. The NYSASN legislative committee continues to work towards adoption of legislation that would mandate that School Districts must hire Registered Professional Nurses.

  6. Continues to provide educational offerings annually for school nurses in NYS, awarding CE's for courses attended, and providing networking opportunities for school nurses .

  7. NYSASN is now an authorized NYS Child Abuse Course provider.

  8. Solicits nominees and honors the winning School Nurse of the Year annually.

  9. Has representation on the New York State Medical Society Sports Medicine and School Health Committee and on the Board of Directors of the Council of Pupil Services Organization.

  10. A member of the NYSASN Board of Directors serves as a member of the NASN Board of Directors and attends all national meetings.  NYSASN sponsors the attendance of its current president at each NASN annual conference.

  11. Continues to work closely with NYSNA and the State Education Department to improve school health services.

  12. NYSASN provides a delegate to the New York State Council of Educational Associations to represent the issues of school nurses at their business meetings three times per year .This delegate has voting privileges on the NYSCEA BOD.

  13. NYSASN has a representative on the Department of Health's Emergency Medical Services for Children Advisory Committee, which meets three times per year.

  14. Offers two educational scholarships per year for those qualified members seeking to continue to pursue their studies at undergraduate and graduate levels.

The mission of the New York State Association of School Nurses is to advance

the practice of school nursing and to enhance the educational success of students by promoting quality health services
