Hello Everyone!
I have been busy organizing two meetings for us. These meetings will be open to members of the New York State Association of School Nurses (NYSASN) as well as non-members. A few school nurses were only available on wednesday evenings, unfortunately I was not able to arrange for a wednesday this time, however I will keep Wednesdays in mind for future meetings.
Our first meeting will be a Zone 8 Networking meeting where we will have a NYSASN Update, share ideas about organizing our group, and discuss our needs. I have also confirmed a speaker, Dr. Anne Cahill, for that night. The following is information regarding this meeting:
NYSASN Zone 8 School Nurse Meeting Date: Thursday, September 16, 2010 Time: 4:30 pm - 7:00 pm Speaker: Dr. Anne Cahill, Cardio-Thoracic Surgeon at CVPH Title: "Women and Heart Disease" Topic focus: Women and heart health, healthful living, diet and exercise -
I asked that Dr. Cahill speak to us regarding our health. We are role models in our districts and most conferences we go to focus on who we care for, what we need to do for others and how to prioritize all the things we juggle in a day! This night will be a focus on you! What does the research say regarding women and heart health? What can we do to be kind to OUR hearts??
Come join us for a relaxing and informative evening and start the school year off making healthful choices for YOU! Male School nurses are welcome too! I am not sure if there are any out there... Place: Ground Round - 32 Smithfield Blvd. Plattsburgh, NY 12901 518- 561-2897
Meeting Specifics: Ground Round will give us the room free as long as everyone spends a total of $10 on their meal and drink. I thought this was a good deal. I will send a reminder with an agenda about a week ahead of time. PLEASE RSVP (yes/no) to me ASAP at maeve56@msn.com. I will need numbers for the Ground Round, however I also want to be sure it will be worth Dr. Cahill's time, so I would like to know how many will be able to come to hear her speak.
Our second meeting will be a full day conference in Saranac Lake. Nurses from Hamilton county will also join us for this day as I am coordinating it on our Superintendents Conference Day, which is Friday, October 22, 2010 (through FEH BOCES). Clinton county nurses calendar does not coordinate with this day, however, I believe that your districts will be support your attendance if you request to attend this free conference. Reserve your substitute nurses now, as our agenda, still in process, will include most of the following topics:
-“Teaching Our Children Healthy Lifestyle Choices” - addressing childhood obesity, diet, exercise, and diabetes
-Drug Recognition and Assessment Skills
-Eye Injury and Assessment - When to refer
-Management of Student Health Information - Forms that will help you keep organized
-Immunizations
I thank you for your help in spreading the word about these Professional Development opportunities. I look forward to hearing from you regarding the September 16th meeting in Plattsburgh.
Please share this email with any school nurse whom you know and is not on the email list. I am still waiting to receive replies from the survey I sent out in June. I am also still creating a contact list of school nurses who sent a reply already. All are certainly welcome!!!
